What is Botox
Botox is a trade name for botulinum toxin, a purified protein that is used to treat a variety of dental issues, medical problems, and cosmetic concerns. Botulinum toxin A is the form that is used most widely by doctors. When a skilled medical or dental professional injects Botox into a patient’s facial muscles, the protein attaches to nerve endings and inhibits nerve transmission in that area. Simply put, this means that the injected muscles cannot contract or do so with less force. It can take around three to ten days to notice visible results, but the effects of Botox treatment lasts much longer; approximately 3 months on average (individual results may vary).
So, is Botox safe?
Botulinum toxin A treatment has a superb safety record. Because Botox is a temporary treatment, once it wears off, it is gone completely. To ensure your Botox treatment is safe, always work with a professional who is trained in performing Botox injections.
Dental Botox for Teeth Grinding & Clenching
Have you found yourself grinding or clenching your teeth at night? If so, your dentist may have diagnosed you with bruxism, a condition where your jaw muscles “chew” without the presence of food. For those patients wishing to prevent further wear and alleviate muscle soreness, Botox can be placed. You will still be able to speak and chew normally, but the force with which you can contract the muscles is decreased.
Botox & Dermal Fillers in Cosmetic Dentistry
In addition to the health benefits that dental Botox can provide, your dentist can also perform Botox injections for certain cosmetic reasons. If indicated, a custom plan specific to your needs will be generated and discussed with you. Call our office to schedule a consultation with Dr. Hernandez
